best soundbar subwoofer combo

Soundbars have exploded in popularity during the recent years and for a good reason. They are an easy yet high quality option between the often god-awful integrated speakers of a TV and a full multi-piece home theater set. A conveniently sized soundbar requires less space and less money than a full home theater set.

As said, the integrated speakers of modern televisions are somewhere between bad and very bad. This development has been accelerated by the thinning of new TVs, as the space for speakers is getting more and more limited. Even if you don’t consider yourself a film freak you will get a lot out of an improved sound system.

While the depth of the screens has steadily decreased, the overall growth of screen sizes has led to an acute lack of space in many living rooms. A soundbar is a perfect solution for this problem. Let’s have a look at the best soundbars for the price.

Best Soundbar Subwoofer Combo

Sony HT-X9000F

Sony HT-X9000F

Looking for a stunningly good cinematic experience? Look no further.

  • Size: 36-5/8" x 2-3/8" x 3-3/8" + 7-1/2" x 15-1/8" x 15-1/4" (subwoofer)
  • Bluetooth: Yes ✅
  • Total power: 300 W
  • Voice control: No ❌
  • Subwoofer: Yes ✅
  • Surround: Dolby Atmos/DTS:X
  • Dolby Atmos
  • Excellent sound modes
  • Unbeatable value for money
  • As good as it sounds, it's still not a 5.1 set

A soundbar and subwoofer combo that supports Dolby Atmos and enables UHD passthrough is not something you come across too often at this price range.

Sony HT-9000F has got all the goods starting from great preset sound modes for various purposes (cinema, music, sports, gaming, even news), night mode, clear voice, IR Repeater (passes the TV remotes IR signal on to your telly in case the soundbar blocks the receiver)… you name it, this soundbar has it.

The sound stage is wide and the 10-inch wireless sub blasts in a way that will surely get you sucked right into the whatever world you’re witnessing on your screen, especially on Dolby Atmos. Be sure to wear a helmet once you start dodging those bullets that seem to be whistling over your head.

Yamaha MusicCast BAR 400

Yamaha MusicCast BAR 400

Quality all-round soundbar for multiple purposes.

  • Size: 38-5/8" x 2-3/8" x 4-3/8" + 7-1/8" x 16-3/8" x 16" (subwoofer)
  • Bluetooth: Yes ✅
  • Drivers: 4x woofers + 2x tweeters
  • Total power: 200 W (100 W + 100 W)
  • Voice control: Yes (not built in) ✅
  • Subwoofer: Yes ✅
  • Surround: DTS Virtual:X
  • Excels in both music and movies
  • MusicCast extension possibilities
  • Easy to set up
  • Would expect more adjustability for the price
  • No Dolby Atmos or true DTS:X

Yamaha MusicCast BAR 400 (also known as YAS-408) is quite unsurprisingly a part of Yamaha MusicCast product family. This means that the soundbar can easily be turned into a full 5.1 surround set by pairing it with a couple of MusicCast 20  or MusicCast 50  speakers.

In addition to the basic controls the remote control has options for 3D surround, subwoofer volume control and Clear Voice and Bass Extension modes. Other adjustments can be found on Yamaha’s MusicCast CONTROLLER app. They include presets for movies, music and sports for example, but these didn’t seem to have too much of an effect on the sound.

BAR 400 sits somewhere between the categories of “bang for your buck” and “premium” – the sound, overall quality and the extension possibilities are pure premium but it lacks the support for lossless multi-channel audio codecs such as Dolby TrueHD and Dolby Atmos.

Yamaha YAS-209

Yamaha YAS-209

Yamaha YAS-209 is best used for home cinema experiences.

  • Size: 36-5/8" × 2-1/2" × 4-1/4" + 7-1/2" × 16-1/2" × 16" subwoofer
  • Bluetooth: Yes ✅
  • Drivers: 4x front + 2x tweeter
  • Total power: 200 W (100 W + 100 W)
  • Voice control: Yes ✅
  • Subwoofer: Yes ✅
  • Surround: DTS Virtual:X
  • Crisp, clear sound
  • Packs quite a punch
  • Alexa built in
  • Settings not visible from the sofa
  • No night mode

Yamaha YAS-207, the predecessor of YAS-209, was the first soundbar to introduce the DTS Virtual:X virtual surround sound. Even though it understandably doesn’t compare to real surround sound, it makes movies much more immersive. With YAS-209 you get the same deal but with slight improvements, such as the built in Amazon Alexa.

YAS-209 lacks some features when compared to its higher end competitors. For example, there’s no option for room correction or a night mode. The dialogue-enhancing Clear Voice and Bass Extension features are still available, just like in the YAS-207.

Even if the feature list might seem underwhelming, YAS-209 makes up for it with the sound quality. The simplistic design will also fit in nicely in most living rooms.

Best Soundbar Under 300 With Bluetooth

JBL Bar 2.1

JBL Bar 2.1

A great amount of features and high quality for a great price.

  • Size: (W x H x D) 38” x 2.3” x 2.7” / 8.9” x 8.9” x 14.6” subwoofer
  • Bluetooth: Yes ✅
  • Drivers: 4 racetrack drivers + 2 tweeters
  • Total power: 300 W
  • Voice control: No ❌
  • Subwoofer: Yes ✅
  • Surround: Dolby Digital Harman Virtual Sound
  • Excellent value for a 2.1 set
  • Loud enough even for bigger spaces
  • Exceptional remote control
  • We're not fully convinced of the virtual surround sound - it makes dialogue unclear

The 2.1 Bar from JBL’s soundbar family is a great “bang for your buck” choice for your living room. The 6.5-inch wireless subwoofer adds depth especially for the cinematic experience but it also performances well with music.

The remote control can do the obvious basic controls, but in addition to that it can also be used for audio syncing, bass adjustment, changing between different presets (we especially liked the movie preset), shuffle, soundshift (fluid changing between TV and Bluetooth sound sources) and the savior of everyone living in an apartment building: night mode, which makes loud noises quieter.

JBL Bar is also available without the subwoofer (JBL Bar 2.0 ), but the value in 2.1 is so great that we don’t think it’s worth considering unless you definitely know that you don’t want a subwoofer.

Polk Audio Magnifi Mini

Polk Audio Magnifi Mini

Excellent soundbar & subwoofer combo for smaller spaces.

  • Size: 4.3 x 13.4 x 3.2 inches
  • Bluetooth: Yes ✅
  • Drivers: 4x mid-range + 2x tweeters
  • Total power: 150 W
  • Voice control: No ❌
  • Subwoofer: Yes ✅
  • Surround: 5.1 Dolby Digital
  • Extremely small, will fit any space
  • Sounds bigger than its size
  • Plenty of connectivity options
  • The 5.1 experience is just marketing buzz
  • Lacklustre mid-range

Polk Audio MagniFi Mini is marketed with a lot of hype for its 5.1 surround sound capabilities. It’s a statement that feels quite bizarre as soon as you lay your eyes on the main speaker: it is 13.4 inches wide… or narrow. Oh well, sales men have talked the talk since time immemorial, but once again it’s all talk no walk – at least in normal living room conditions. We could imagine that in a very small space with optimal placing you could get a “5.1 like” experience out of MagniFi Mini.

Even without the true 5.1 surround experience this tiny soundbar paired with a subwoofer is an excellent set that sounds a whole lot of larger than it physically is.

Creative Stage 2.1

Creative Stage 2.1

Good soundbar & subwoofer combo for extremely tight budgets.

  • Size: 2.75 x 21.6 x 3 in + 16.5 x 4.5 x 9.8 in (subwoofer)
  • Bluetooth: Yes ✅
  • Drivers: 2x mid-range
  • Total power: 160 W
  • Voice control: No ❌
  • Subwoofer: Yes ✅
  • Surround: No ❌
  • Sound adjustments
  • Various inputs and outputs
  • Not the richest sound

Creative Stage 2.1 offers such an amount of features for under $100 that there are not many competitors for it.

The sound quality is excellent for the price, but expectedly it does not compare to the more expensive models on our list. Stage 2.1 is so small that it would be better suited for a computer setup, but it does well enough in small living rooms.

Choosing The Right Soundbar For You

If you’re still having a hard time making a decision, let’s have a look at the aspects which you should take into consideration when buying.

Price

Price is quite obviously the number one criterion for most people when buying pretty much any device out there. We’ve decided to include various price ranges as most people don’t have the need or the budget for the best of the best. It’s unnecessary to invest a four digit sum on a soundbar if you’re just using it for a casual TV night every now and then.

Sound Quality

Obviously the criterion number two when purchasing an audio device. It might even be the number one if you’ve got a wallet fat enough. This is best tested by your own ears, but if you don’t have the possibility for it your best bet is to do proper research online.

Subwoofer Or No?

As soundbars are designed as an accessory for your TV, they usually come paired with a subwoofer. It’s a vital element for the proper home theater experience.

Since you have landed on our article about soundbars with subwoofers, you’ve probably already made up your mind about which kind of a set you want. If you’re just generally interested in getting a new audio device but you’re more of a music listener, we suggest having a look at our guide about best bluetooth speakers for example.
